Macau, despite its highly urbanized landscape, is home to a remarkable diversity of wildlife. From lush green spaces to coastal habitats, the region supports a wide range of species, some of which are unique or of significant ecological importance. Recognizing the need to document and preserve this rich biodiversity, the Macau Biodiversity Project was established to compile and share information on the species found in the territory.
The project is coordinated by the Science and Environment Research Lab of the University of Saint Joseph and is generously funded by the Macao Foundation. Our goal is to provide an accessible, up-to-date, and comprehensive database that serves researchers, educators, conservationists, and the general public. By cataloging species and monitoring ecological changes, we aim to raise awareness and contribute to the protection of Macau’s natural heritage.
A Message from Our Project Leader
“Macau’s biodiversity is often overlooked due to its urban nature, but it holds many hidden ecological treasures. Our team is committed to documenting and understanding these species to ensure they are valued and conserved for future generations. We hope this platform will inspire curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world in Macau.”
