Description:

This is one of the largest Cicadas found in Macau. They are bownish black and can be distinguished from a similar species (Cryptotympana mandarina) by is rounded male operculum. They can be found in Taipa and Coloane from May to August.

Chinese Name: 绿翅木蜂

Description:

This large bee can reach 2,5 cm in length. The body is all black while the wings have metalic colors under sunlight. Males can be distinguished from females because they have a grey patch on the thorax. This species nest only in bamboom stems and can be observed feeding from flowers in urban parks throughout spring and summer.

Description:

This blood sucking insect has around 2,5 cm in length. It is brown in color with q orange-red margin on outer edge of abdomen, extending horizontally between segments. This is a cosmopolitan species and it is frequently associated to rodents.

Description:

This large cricket (about 37-44 mm) is yellowish brown in color, has long antennae, a large, squared head and a stout body. It dig a hole of about 30-60 cm depth where it just go out at night.  Males can produce sound. Usually found at the edge of meadows.

Description:

This 30 mm cricket gets is name from is fore legs developed into claw for digging. He lives underground feeding on roots, insects and earthworms. This species is responsible for several crops plagues.

Description:

Description:

This Chafer has 2-2,5 cm in length and metallic green, golden-green, coppery or coppery-brown coloration. Each side of the pronotum has a narrow white line and the dorsal surface has several white spots and marks. The adults pest on peach and lychee fruit trees.

Description:

This beetle has around 3,5-6 cm and is all dark red, dark brown or black with a very shiny texture. They have a robust, stout body and more or less long horns that lack the females. Males make hissing noises when disturbed by rubbing the abdomen against the wing covers. This species is used for staging beetle fights in Thailand.

Description:

The Green Click Beetle has around 4,5 cm in length and, like all the species in this family, has a slender body. The upperside is metallic green in color and have a narrow joint which allows the beetle to make a clicking. The larvae are called wireworms and live in the soil feeding on the roots of trees and plants.

English Name: Chinese Blister Beetle, Large Yellow-banded Blister Beetle

Chinese Name: 大斑芫菁

Family: Meloidae

Description:

This Blister Beetle is about 2,5 cm long. The coloration is all black with three broad, wavy yellow bands on the elytra. This species contain cantharidin and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of cancer. It can be seen consuming Hibiscus flowers.
