Description:
Deciduous tree, up to 25 m tall, bark deep grey, rough and fissured; winter buds and peduncles densely covered with pale greyish yellow skilky hairs. Stiuplar scars l/4-l/3 the length of petioles. Petioles 1-2.5cm, villose adaxially narrowly furrowed. Leaves obovate emarginate, adaxially deep green, villose when young, pilose on veins in age, abaxially pale green, villose along veins, lateral veins 8-10 on each side of midvein, reticulations of veins conspicuous. Flower appearing before leaves, erect, fragrant, 10~ l 6 cm in diam., peduncles conspicuously enlarged, densely pale yellow sericeous, tepals 9, white, usually pinkish at bases, subequal, oblong-obovate, 6-8 (-10) x2.5-4.5(-6.5) cm; stamens 7-12 mm, anthers 6-7 mm, dehiscing laterally, connectives ca. 5mm wide, exserted and forming a micro, gynoecium pale green, glabrous, cylindrical, 2-2.5 cm, pistils narrowly ovoid, 3-4 mm, style conical 4 mm. Aggregate fruit cylindrical, oftencurved due to some undeveloped carpels, 12-15 x 3.5-5cm; follicles thickly woody, brown, while lenticeled; seeds
heart-shaped, laterally compressed, ca. 9 x 10 mm, testa red, endotesta black.
