Description: Deciduous small tree, 6-10 m tall; twigs glabrous. STipular scars about 1/3 the length of petioles. Petioles 1-1.5 cm , pubescent. Leaves obovate, 6-15 x 4-7.5 cm, papery, base cuneate, gradually narrowed, apex short acute, adaxially remaining with hairs along midvein at base, abaxially + pubescent; lateral veins 7-9 on each side of midvein. Flowers appearing before leaves, pale red to dark red; tepals 6-9, the outer 3 usually one third shorter than the inner ones; stamens 1-1.2 cm, anthers ca. 6 mm, dehiscing laterally, connectives exserted and forming a mucro; gynoecium glabrous, cylindrical, ca. 1.5 cm. Aggregate fruit ca. 8×3 cm; follicles ovoid or obovoid, 1-1.5 cm, black when mature, white-lenticeled; seeds dark brown, broadly obovate or obovate, compressed laterally.
